第27回 前置詞の話 その3
引き続き主な前置詞についてお話しします。その前に、with にもう一つ間違いやすい用法がありました。「の許で」という意味です。
●例文1
The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany shall register this Convention with the Secretariat of the United Nations.
ドイツ連邦共和国政府は本条約を国連事務局に登録するものとする。
なお register...with 〜 には"〜 と位置合せ（見当合せ）する"という意味もあります。
●例文2
When you place your order with us, we will confirm receipt of that order via return e-mail.
弊社にご発注いただくと、受注確認の返信eメールを差し上げます。
同じ形でも、place an order with your credit card は、もちろん"を使って"で、意味が違います。
by
by は御存知のように行為者や手段を表し「よって」と訳すのが主な用法ですが、位置を表す「の傍に」、時間を表す「までに」の意味でもよく使われます。その他の用法として、程度を表す「だけ」、かけ算を表す「×」があります。

of
of は所属などを表し「の」と訳すのが主な用法です。動詞派生名詞の後では、自動詞の主語、他動詞の目的語を表します。movement of an object "物体の移動"は"物体が移動すること"または"物体を移動させること"であり、結局は同じことです。
また of は use, importance, value などの抽象名詞と共に複合形容詞を作ります。つまり useful, important, valuable と同じ意味を表します。ただし、副詞句を作る in a 〜 manner などと同様により詳しい修飾が可能です。なお、of 〜 type などの形も同様に形容詞として働きますが、「のもの」を補わないと意味がずれることがあります。

Such world-famous institutions as the Mayo Clinic admit hundreds of victims of these diseases of the blood-forming organs.
メイヨー・クリニックなどの世界的に有名な機関に、これらの造血器官疾患の患者が数百人入院している。

of はまた、made of のように材料を表します。

deprive, rob などの動詞は、deprive A of B で"AからBを奪う"という意味になります。

これは bleed air from the brake system の形もあります。
また inform, advise, notify, warn などの通知動詞も、その内容を表す語の前にofをとり、inform A of B で"AにBを（について）通知する"という意味になります。いずれの場合も of 以下が動詞と離れていますので、間違えて前の名詞に掛けないようによく注意して下さい。

to
to はどの意味も「に（へ）」「に対して」の基本義からでています。訳語上の問題ですが、approach が method に類似の意味で使われる場合、to は「ための」と訳すべきです。

A to B は「AからB（まで）」の意味ですが、様々な表現に使われます。日本人の感覚では between A and B で表したくなるようなものも to で表せます。もちろん、以前にお話ししたように、1 −10, 1 to 10, 1 through 10 はすべて同じ意味で「1〜10」です。なお ten to one は「十中八九」です。また four-to-one multiplexer 「4−1マルチプレクサ」などという表現もあります。（これは4つの信号を多重化することを意味します。）

ハイパーテキスト文書はユーザからアクセス可能である。
to は結果を表すこともできます。

versus (vs.) は「対」ですが、翻訳に工夫が必要です。

from
from, off, out of は、それぞれ to, on, into の反対語です。訳し方に余り問題はありません。
