第20回 副詞の話
はじめに
今回は、副詞についてお話しします。例によって、間違いやすいもの、複数の意味があるもの、訳しにくいものについて取り上げます。
first、then、lastly は一組になって物事の順序を表します。「まず、次いで、最後に」と訳します。このことを知っていれば、lastly を"最終的に"などと訳すことはなくなるはずです。順序を示す場合にも、単に列挙する場合にも使います。なお then の代わりに順序の場合は thereafter、列挙の場合は secondly、thirdly なども使われます。
●例文1
As the shaft is rotated, the axial fuel passage A in the shaft is successively brought into communication with the fuel passage B to E formed in the control cylinder; i.e., the fuel passage A is communicated first with the fuel passage B through the distribution slit b, then with the fuel passage C through the distribution slit c, then with the fuel passage D through the distribution slit d and lastly with the fuel passage E through the distribution slit e.
シャフトが回転するとき、シャフト内の軸方向燃料通路Aは制御シリンダ内に形成された燃料通路B〜Eと次々に連通する。すなわち、燃料通路Aは、まず分配スリットbを介して燃料通路Bと連通し、次いで分配スリットcを介して燃料通路Cと、次いで分配スリットdを介して燃料通路Dと、最後に分配スリットeを介して燃料通路Eと連通する。
なお、first と似たものには firstly 「第一に」、at first 「最初は」、initially 「当初」、for the first time 「始めて」、in the first place 「まず第一に」、at the beginning 「始めに」、in the beginning 「手始めに」、then と似たものには next 「次に」、thereafter 「その後」、lastly と似たものには finally 「最後に」、at last 「最後には」、ultimately 「最終的に」、eventually 「最終的に」、for the last time 「それを最後として」、at the end 「遂に」、in the end 「とうとう」、in the long run 「結局は」などがありますが、それぞれ様々なニュアンスを持つので、文脈をよく理解した上で適切に訳す必要があります。
simply は、もちろん例文3Aのように simple の副詞形として「簡単に」の意味で使われることもありますが、主に merely と同じく「単に」の意味で使われます。by 〜ing の前につく場合は必ずそうです。このことを知らない人が時々います。

also、only、particularly など焦点化副詞と呼ばれる一群の副詞は、主語と動詞の間に来たとき、主語や動詞はもちろんのこと目的語や副詞句などあらゆる文要素を修飾することができます。口語では修飾される語句にアクセントがつきます。文章語でそのうちよく出てきて間違われやすいのは、also が主語にかかるか、目的語にかかるかです。位置からは判断できないので、この位置に also がでてきた場合は、内容をよく理解してどちらにかかるのか判断する必要があります。

一方の基板は光透過性であり、片面に導電性コーティングを有する。他方の基板も片面に導電性コーティングを有する。

本発明はまた、前記の方法を実施するための液晶セルをも対象とする。
関係節の主語にかかる場合など also がかかる語が訳文ではその前に出てこない場合は、「やはり」と訳すとうまくいきます。
●例文6
It is also likely that such highly reactive metals undergo a chemical reaction with the nearby organic materials which also could have negative effects on device performance.
このような反応性の高い金属が、やはりデバイスの性能に悪影響を及ぼす可能性のある、近くの有機材料と化学反応をすることもあり得る。
again は、「再度、再び、もう一度」の他に、「やはり、この場合も」の意味で使われることがよくあります。文頭に来た場合は moreover と同じく「さらに」と訳すべきこともあります。

still は「依然として、なお、まだ」の意味で使われるのが普通ですが、「それでもなお、やはり」の意味に使われることもよくあり、また比較級の前では「さらに」の意味になります。

even 「さえも、すら」は普通は意味ははっきりしていますが、and evenと続くときは訳しにくいものです。and を「さらには」と訳すとうまくいきます。その他、「しかも」という意味になるときもあります。

here は、場所以外の意味で使われることがあります。次の例では"ここでは"と訳しても意味は通じますが、「この場合は」とする方がはっきりします。

then は「次いで」「そのとき、当時」の他に、「その場合、それなら」の意味があります。if の後では通常 then は訳しませんが、他の場合はこの訳が表面に出てくることがあります。
●例文20

thus は、接続副詞としてよく使われ、「したがって」と訳します。"こうして"ではありません。
